Although healthy habits and an active lifestyle can provide most people with a clean bill of health, some medical conditions are unavoidable. One young boy from Colorado was born with a rare genetic condition that has his skin hardening out of his control, and you won’t believe his family’s reaction in slide #2 (though if you’re a parent, maybe you will).Read more:
12. Sometimes Health Is Out Of Our Hands
We do our best to keep our lifestyles active and our health in the best shape possible. Although devastating, sometimes genetics plays a big role in whether or not we live well and relatively normal lives. Read more:
11. Natalie And Tim Rogers Couldn’t Wait To Meet Their Son
The Rogers adopted their son Jaiden in 2007 when he was only two years old. Natalie and Tim knew that their son had a very troubled past, but they were willing to help him adjust every step of the way.
You won’t believe what he must overcome in slide #4!
10. Jaiden Had A Really Rough Start
The Rogers traveled to Georgia to pick up Jaiden and bring him back to their home in Colorado. He was born with fetal alcohol syndrome and was extremely malnourished. Read more:
9. The Rogers Worked At Earning His Fragile Trust
Jaiden was so used to neglect that his new family caught him eating from the dog’s food bowl a few times. He was so scared of abandonment that he would go by the bedside of his new parents and touch their faces to make sure they were still there.
Slide #2 shows that his parents would always be by his side, no matter the circumstances.
8. Tim Rogers Realized Something Wasn’t Right
He began to notice four years ago that hard lumps of skin had formed on Jaiden’s arms. “It’s almost like tapping on a counter top, on a hard surface. That’s what it feels like,” Tim revealed. This was simply the beginning of Jaiden’s struggles.
7. This Odd Condition Spread Across His Entire Body
The hard lumps began to appear on Jaiden’s back, hips, and legs. The next slide reveals the seriousness of this young boy’s rare condition! Read more:
6. Jaiden’s Condition Confined Him To A Wheelchair
Jaiden informed Natalie and Tim Rogers that he was unable to walk anymore, and he was forced to get around in a wheelchair. Jaiden’s parents were shocked when doctors informed them of their son’s grave diagnosis.
5. The Young Boy Suffers From Stiff Skin Syndrome
Stiff skin syndrome is a rare condition that causes the skin to harden to the point of little to no joint movement. “It’s kind of outrageous-sounding when you say a boy turning to stone. People can’t get that through their mind,” Natalie Rogers stated.
The doctors’ approach to helping the young boy in slide #3 is unbelievable!
4. This Condition Is Extremely Rare — And Doctors Have No Real Answers
There are only 40 other people diagnosed with stiff skin syndrome worldwide, and there is no cure for the disease at this time. Even so, doctors have come up with a solution to help the boy stay as comfortable as possible.
3. One Treatment Can Slow Down The Disease’s Progression
Although doctors can not cure Jaiden, they have started giving him chemotherapy treatments to slow the progression of the disease. The skin that is already affected cannot be repaired, but doctors are hopeful that “this treatment helps prevent the spread of it and holds it in its tracks.”
Despite it all, slide #1 shows that Jaiden is just an ordinary kid.
2. Jaiden’s Parents Have No Regrets
“You know you love him too much. You don’t know what to do. You try to fight for everything you can,” Natalie Rogers stated. His parents will continue to find new treatments for Jaiden, and they aren’t willing to give up the fight to save their son.
1. Jaiden Rogers Wants What Every Normal Kid Desires
He misses hanging out with his friends and wants everyone to know that stiff skin syndrome is “not contagious.” Although Jaiden’s hips are now completely immobile, he doesn’t show any signs of stopping.
He attends physical therapy three times a week, and he has his entire family behind him every step of the way.
