To be pregnant and to give birth are the divinities we have been blessed with. They are unique and every woman who feels them, sees her conscience grow by leaps and bounds and gets a deep insight into how innocent and pious the deeds of nature are.
There had been this incident when Porsche Thomas, writer, model, like any other expectant, excited mother shared her joy of being pregnant on the internet. ‘Twas in January 2017 that she snapped a picture of her baby bump captioning it beautifully. But, to her utter disappointment, the internet fraternity failed to understand her emotions and came out trolling her. But, being a woman of strength and mother of twins, she did not give in on the dud judgements of the social media.
Her reply is simply EPIC and is winning hearts! Have a read. A pregnant black writer wanted to share her joy of being pregnant.
It’s easy to feel exposed and vulnerable on the Internet. Any time you share a photo of yourself, you risk becoming a meme or a punching bag for a wave of people with the click of a button. This pregnant African American woman was shocked when she discovered that her beautiful baby bump was shamed after taking a photo of herself sunbathing.
Unfortunately, Instagram trollers unleashed hate on her.
Her post read, “Getting down to the wire. Only about two weeks left for me and these boys before they make their debut. Crazy excited and totally nervous. What a way to start #2017 #35weeks #twins #babybump.” That said, what happened next was shocking.
A lot of the comments on her photo in which she is sporting the baby bump in a bikini were nasty.
While the writer received positive comments about her sunbathing photo, there were others that were downright disgusting. Some of these comments were filled with body shamers. Thomas was attacked by anonymous bullies and haters that took it upon themselves to ask why she’s “nasty” looking or why her belly was “so black.” Fortunately, she didn’t lie down.
In an interview with BET, she responded with valour.
Fortunately, Porsche decided to use her platform and her popularity to address these body shamers. Instead of getting down about it, she turned this into a teaching lesson to promote awareness. In an interview with BET she said, “I was baffled. I didn’t understand it because, to me, it wasn’t even a great photo of myself. It was just a photo to embrace the belly. It wasn’t that deep when I posted it.”
On exposing people to pregnant woman and to clear the stigma.
In the same interview, Porsche explained the reason behind the shocking reaction, and why it’s time to destigmatize what it means to be pregnant as a black woman while exposing people to the beautiful image. “We don’t really get to see Black baby bumps and when we [do], people have a negative reaction to it, for some reason, like it’s vulgar.”
That said, Porsche still wanted to respond to the haters, and her response was epic.
Thomas decided to respond again, and with an epic Instagram post.
In an Instagram post, Thomas posted a photo of herself “sipping on some tea” while cradling her baby bump with the other hand. She captioned the photo with an epic clapback. “While some of Y’all have been in my comments criticising the blackness that is my belly and me during what should have been your holiday cheer, I over here am enjoying life, growing tiny humans, performing miracles and hopefully getting even blacker.”
Porsche is someone who speaks her heart out, unapologetically.
Although the negative comments could have disturbed her as they were upsetting, Porsche Thomas didn’t let the haters get to her. While speaking with BET, she highlighted her positive attitude, “I shake everything off that’s negative. I don’t hold on to other people’s opinions that have nothing to do with me. I laugh at the ignorance. I know it exists, it’s there, and it’s sad”.
Her twins, the little bundles of joy.
She rose above the criticism and trolls and lives life the perfect way.
Here she is with her family…
Wishing the world a Happy New Year 2018. Long way to go lady, we are proud of you.
